My Pleasure Reading. Summary №4

Chapters 25 - 32

The next day David meets Agnes and learns that Uriah is forcing her father to make him a partner in his law firm. She adds that Mr. Wickfield is completely in Uriah's power. Several days after Uriah Heep visits David, and tells him about the new power he has over Mr. Wickfield and about his intentions to marry Agnes.

Mr. Spenlow invites David to his home and introduces him to his beautiful daughter, Dora, and her companion Miss Murdstone. David falls in love with Dora at first sight. Miss Murdstone offers David to behave as if they were distant acquaintances, and he agrees.

David visits his school friend Traddles, who lives in a poor part of the city. There he meets Micawbers, who are again in a difficult financial situation. Mr. and Mrs. Micawber and Traddles accept David's invitation for a dinner at his apartment. After the dinner, David warns Traddles not to lend the Micawbers any money. But Traddles says that has already signed some loans for Mr. Micawber. When everyone has left, Steerforth arrives at David's apartment with a letter from Peggotty, saying that Mr. Barkis is very ill. David says he will visit Peggotty tomorrow, but Steerforth asks him to delay his visit by a day and to come with him to his mother's house. David agrees. But after visiting Steerforth house David comes to an idea that he will never see Steerforth again.

David goes to Yarmouth where he tries to comfort Peggotty and Barkis, but the latter dies early in the morning. Mr. Barkis has put aside a small fortune during his lifetime, and leaves Peggotty a generous sum. He also leaves some money to Mr. Peggotty. David uses his training as a proctor to execute the will. In the evening, Ham comes home without Em’ly and tells David that she has run away with Steerforth. Mr. Peggotty vows to search for Em'ly, throughout the world if necessary. David feels terrible guilt that he introduced Steerforth into the family. Mr. Peggotty decides to go to London and asks David to help him. They visit Mrs. Steerforth who tells them that it is impossible for her son to marry Little Em'ly and offers money for compensation, but Mr. Peggotty refuses. Then Mrs. Steerforth angrily says that her son must get rid of Little Em'ly if he ever hopes to be forgiven. David realizes that Steerforth and his mother are alike in their unyielding spirits. Mr. Peggotty goes off to look for Little Em'ly.
